# Rules and cleanup

> Sort incoming mail automatically and let Aura tidy your inbox every night.

## Rules

Rules act on mail the moment it arrives. Open **Settings → Rules** and build one in plain sentences: *when a message … then …*

**When a message:**

* is from
* is addressed to
* is Cc'd to
* is addressed or Cc'd to
* has subject containing
* has list-id containing

**Then:**

* Move to Folder
* Forward to an email address
* Mark as Read
* Move to Trash
* Any of the above **and** mark as read

<Tip>
  Example: when a message *is from* `billing@vendor.com`, *Move to Folder and Mark as Read* → **Receipts**.

## Nightly cleanup

In **Settings → Cleanup**, Aura tidies your inbox once a night. Each cleanup can be edited or turned off:

| Cleanup | Default |
| - | - |
| Clean up old promotions | Trashes unread promotions older than 3 months |
| Clean up old updates | Trashes updates older than 1 year |
| Archive old transactions | Archives receipts older than 1 year |

Each card shows when it last ran.

## Common questions
